Since the inception of the EU, what has brought European nations together is economics – or business – rather than politics. When another country becomes a member state, it is more like a corporate merger than a political manoeuvre. As a result of such strength in the global arena, there are bound to be remarkable business success stories. And in the mature markets of Europe, this success is now going beyond mere profit and balance sheets. With every successive year of the European Business Awards, there is a greater corporate focus on a more ‘soft’ approach to business. More than ever, this year’s applicants are keen to talk of their corporate social responsibility programmes; their sustainability; their ethical approach to business and their creativity in ensuring staff stay motivated and focused. Operating in the Euro-zone comes with its challenges, one of which is the constant encroachment of regulation. As businesses from new member states face the challenge of spreading their operations across Europe, they also have to face the difficulties associated with ensuring they meet the regulator’s requirements. “With that in mind, applying for a European Business Award is a chance to examine your business practices, ethics and the like, ahead of regulatory demands. We have increasingly noticed that companies are using the Awards as a way to benchmark themselves against the best in Europe,” says Adrian Tripp, CEO of the European Business Awards. While European regulation creates a level SETTING THE GLOBAL STANDARD Special Partner Advertising Feature THE EUROPEAN BUSINESS AWARDS 08 PAGE S2: • The Atradius Growth Strategy of the Year Award • The sponsors at the heart of the EBA PAGE S3: • The Business Innovation of the Year Award • A bright business future PAGE S4: • The Business Leader of the Year Award •Q&A with José María Aznar PAGE S5: • The CMS Business of the Year Award PAGE S6: • The Société Générale Award for Customer Focus PAGE S7: • The Award for Corporate Sustainability PAGE S8: • The RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year Award playing field, some commentators have suggested that these regulations stifle business on the global stage. Not necessarily, says Tripp. “It might be true that European regulation stifles competition, but as growing economies around the world mature, the burden of regulation in these markets increases accordingly, which over time works to level the playing field globally. So in a way, European companies operating effectively and efficiently within the framework of tough regulation in Europe now are increasingly well placed to do business internationally.” Part of the European dream from a corporate perspective must be winning a European Business Award. Competitors face a gruelling judging process, and face an impressive panel of pan-European experts, from the fields of business, politics and academia. This year saw entries from almost every sector of European business, with 25 of the 27 EU member states represented. Chairman of the Judges, Philip Forrest, said: “Particularly encouraging to see was the quality of entries from companies operating out of the new EU member states. Many of these businesses are being run by the younger generation of entrepreneurs, whose vigour and enthusiasm for success is surely a sign that their economies can look forward to a successful future. “Despite forecasts of economic downturn, many of the newer member economies reported steady economic improvement, with falling unemployment and high levels of optimism for the future.” Billions of euros are being pumped into new member states to bolster their economies. The benefits are already tangible – not only in terms of increased regional stability, but also in terms of rapid economic growth - a strategy that already paid off in Ireland, Spain and Portugal, for example. Innovation remains at the heart of European business success. In the environment described, with increasing competition from new member states, the need to adhere to new regulations and an increase in the need for a more socially and environmentally responsible approach to business, innovation is a key driver. Innovation and entrepreneurship go hand in hand – and both are rewarded at the European Business Awards. Former Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov, who served on The CMS European Business of the Year Award judging panel, said: “This event inspires and stimulates European business to reach exacting criteria, where not only annual turnover and sales count, but also factors with high social importance – such as employer/worker relations, and relationships with customers and suppliers – what we define as business ethics. “As a representative of south eastern Europe, I would like to point out that the European Business Awards are of extreme importance for the developing economies of the new EU member countries. The awards encourage ‘new’ European business players to continuously improve their indexes and practices. European business and consumers can only benefit from that.” Former Romanian President, Emil Constantinescu, who sits on the panel for the European Business Award’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award, said he has noticed a shift in ethics from profit-motivated business models to a more socially and environmentally aware model. “This new ‘soft power’ will transform technological progress into innovation. It is no longer hi-tech but hi-touch. Success in this new economy is not based only on reducing costs but rather, requires creating higher value through branding, differentiating style and design. “I must also emphasise how impressed I was by the courage, progress and success of entrepreneurs from Poland and Slovakia; former state communist economies whose difficulties I used to know so well,” he concluded. The European Union can be described as the most confident economic power in the world, now enjoying the most highly evolved form of federal style governance SPONSORED BY EUROPEAN MEDIA PARTNER T his award goes to the organisation which best demonstrates an organic growth strategy, (rather than growth based purely on merger and acquisition activ- ity); and one that has achieved outstanding levels of sales, profit and market share improvement. The Atradius Growth Strategy of the Year Award The sponsors at the heart of the EBA Sound business strategies and great products are meaningless without a growth strategy European Business Awards - Special Partner Advertising Feature SPONSORED BY RUBAN D'HONNEUR WINNERS THE ATRADIUS GROWTH STRATEGY OF THE YEAR AWARD Atradius is delighted to sponsor the Growth Strategy of the Year Award and is proud to be associated with the European Business awards. We wish all the Ruban d’Honneur winners continued success throughout 2008. Dr Peter Ingenlath, Deputy Chairman, Atradius “ ” The European Business Awards are clearly a complex and major undertaking to organise. The Awards exist because a number of forward thinking and progres- sive companies believe it is important to promote and showcase enterprise and en- trepreneurship in Europe. CMS, Société Générale, Atradius, and RSM International all realise a strong Eu- ropean business community is vital to the overall well being of the citizens of Eu- rope. They all support this belief with ac- tion - by putting financial and intellectual resources behind the programme. Sponsors need to have a European or global outlook, and, as Adrian Tripp, Eu- ropean Business Awards CEO puts it: “In seeking sponsors we were keen to work with partners that understood and would be of assistance to the fast growing, interna- tionally-minded businesses that feature prominently throughout the Awards. “In this regard, we could not have done better; all of them are highly experienced and well versed at helping growing organ- isations expand internationally. “CMS is one of the most innovative, ca- pable and interesting law firms in the world. Société Générale is a banking group with a well earned reputation for working with aspiring organisations to facilitate growth. “Atradius is a leading global commercial risk insurer, whose in-depth knowledge of markets has helped ambitious businesses move into new territories, and RSM Inter- national is one of the world’s top ten ac- countancy and advisory practices; and a recognised leader in helping ambitious businesses grow.” With the support of these organizations the European Business Awards have become a respected business barometer and benchmark of excellence. Already in the final line-up of Ruban d’Honneur recipients for its energy saving shipping solution, Beluga Shipping caught the judges’ eyes. Spokesman Verena Frank, Head of Department & Corporate Business, said: “The European Business Awards is the perfect vehicle for extraordinary young entre- preneurs and their companies to promote their innovative ideas and approaches to busi- ness, on a pan-European scale.” Ruban d’Honneur holder BT Technology Systems, the UK-based communications solutions and services provider, presented its innovation in the form of its 21st century net- work (21CN), a five year multi-billion pound network transformation programme. Spokesman, Joe Kelly, communications director for Wholesale and 21CN, said: “Taking part in the Innovation category of the European Business Awards represents a rare chance for the wider community to recognise what we are all trying to achieve - which is to be successful, be innovative and be different.” The sheer depth and variety of entrants is impressive. This year has seen the contest whittled down to ten companies, who feel they deserve the title of Business Innovation of the Year for projects as diverse as staff empowerment programmes and Internet- controlled home security systems. Innovation is one of the three pillars of the European Business Awards, alongside excel- lence and ethics, and for good reason. Without the continuing high levels of inno- vation showcased at the Awards Programme every year there would be little chance for pan-European business to promote their thought leadership and their originality; and in revealing their innovative business ideas and practices, it is hoped that others are encouraged to be bolder in business. The final word on this category can per- haps go to Daniel Muzyka, of the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, who once said: \"A focus on cost- cutting and efficiency has helped many organizations weather a downturn, but this approach will ultimately render them obso- lete. Only the constant pursuit of innovation can ensure long-term success.” D o you have what it takes to enter the 2009 European Business Awards? Do you think your organisation could do better than this year’s winners? Would your business practices stand up to the scrutiny of a panel of expert judges, and could you see your business setting the pan- European standards for excellence, for sustainability, for customer focus? In just a few short months, the European Business Awards 2009 will be opened to entrants, so you can have the chance of pit- ting your business against the crème de la crème of European enterprise. As Phil Forrest, Chairman of the Judges, puts it: “If your organisation can demon- strate professionalism and excellence against the benchmark of the EBA judging process, the business is probably in good shape to continue growing, and ready to face the challenges of modern European business competition.” Bearing this in mind, entering the Awards is a useful opportunity to do some internal ‘housekeeping’. The application process may reveal problem areas, or highlight just how successful your organisation is. If you are successful you will join the elite band of just 70 companies a year across the whole of Europe that will receive the highly regarded Ruban d’Honneur. The European Business Awards exist to showcase, promote and inspire business success for the economic prosperity of Europe. T he European Business Awards has the voluntary services of distinguished business and political experts who serve as judges and on a Strategic Advisory Panel. The involvement of such key individu- als allows the Programme to draw upon their collective business knowledge and wisdom to further strengthen the worth of the Awards for all participants. The 11-strong panel also looks at how to disseminate the programme’s find- ings to an even wider audience. José María Aznar is one of the 11 strategic Advisory Panel members. Born in Madrid in 1953, he served as Spain’s Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004. Throughout his two terms as Prime Minis- ter, he spearheaded economic and social reform. Thanks to various liberalisation processes and the introduction of measures to promote competition, along with budgetary controls, rationalised public spending and tax reductions, almost five million jobs were cre- ated in Spain. The nation’s average income increased from 78% to 87% of the average income of the European Union. He is a strong supporter of the European Union's commit- ment to freedoms and economic reform. He forms part of the committees of various organisations, including the committee for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative and the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba (ICDC). He is Executive President of FAES (The Foundation for Social Studies and Analysis); a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Georgetown where he leads seminars on con- temporary European politics at the Edmund A. Walsh School; and he sits on numerous corpo- rate boards. He took time out from this busy interna- tional schedule to answer a few questions regarding business in Europe. EBA: How do you see the business climate in Europe at present? José María Aznar: I think that Europe is not doing well, and prospects are not good as well. There are many challenges: structural reforms in the labour market, pension systems, education, taxation, alongside the issues of lib- eralisation and competition. But the problem does not lie with monetary policy or the ECB. EBA: As a great proponent of economic and social reform in your own country, what advice can you give to new member states from Eastern Europe? José María Aznar: To continue with poli- cies of economic reform. They are performing well because they believe in economic free- dom. EBA: Would you describe the EU as a good example of where politics and business have combined and work well together, or does Brussels interfere too much with the prevailing laissez-faire economic models? José María Aznar: Brussels has done very good things, such as the original Bolkenstein Directive, [the arguably controversial Services Directive, a piece of legislation that seeks to open Europe's service sector to more competi- tion], and bad things, such as not playing an active role in ensuring free movement of cap- ital within the EU. EBA: How important do you think it is for European businesses to show a commitment to corporate social responsibility, sustainability and the environment? Can good practice in this area go hand in hand with good profits? José María Aznar: Yes indeed. Profit and good practice are fully compatible. But I believe in corporate social responsibility as a free decision of companies, not as an obliga- tion resulting from government decisions. EBA: During the European Business Awards, you will be presenting the Business Leader of the Year Award. What qualities do you expect the winner to have? José María Aznar: I expect them to be a strong leader with a strong commitment to Western values and principles. EBA: What is your opinion of the European Business Awards? José María Aznar: I have the highest opin- ion. It is a great initiative to promote the values and principles we believe in: liberty, democ- racy, freedom of speech, open markets and open societies. Annual turnover is approximately EUR260.9m. the judges’ task interesting, it certainly doesn’t make it any easier. Former President of Bulgaria Petar Stoyanov, one of the judges in this cate- gory, perhaps summed up the difficulties presented to the panel, when asked to sin- gle out the Ruban d’Honneur recipients who particularly impressed him: “The Pol- ish bank Pekao – because it was the only eastern European company, and for its impressive financial results and its brave financial expansion in Eastern Europe. The John Wood Group, Kenmore Property Group and CPL – for their wonderful results and financial indices. SES Astra – for the superb up-to-date satellite technol- ogy that has impressed all of the panel. Beluga Group and Econcern – for their responsible approach to environmental pro- tection. Whessoe and Wood McKenzie – for their business success and brave inno- vative approach.” Overall Chairman of the European Busi- ness Award judges, Philip Forrest said: “It can be both an onerous and honourable task to be invited to judge The CMS Business of the Year Award. The judges have to make sure this award really does go to the crème de la crème of European enterprises as the winner is perceived immediately as a Euro- pean, if not global, benchmark for best business practice. Therefore it is always a decision that is never taken lightly.” Collectively in the last year alone these businesses have added over € 1.5 billion in turnover to their operations and increased their profits by over € 500 million. “It is the amazing agility and litheness of these relatively large organisations that makes them truly impressive. It enables them to move quickly and prosper in new markets and product segments acting in a way which is normally only the preserve of far smaller organisations,” said Robert Derry-Evans, CMS Executive Partner Unfortunately, only one of the recipients of the Ruban d’Honneur can leave with the ultimate accolade of The CMS Business of the Year Award. However, all deserve the title. CMS is delighted to be the sponsor for the second year in succession of the European Business of the Year Award. Within the European business community each of the finalists is a leader in its field, and has shown business excellence, impressive financial growth and technical or strategic innovation. We are proud to be associated, via the European Business Awards 2008, with organisations demonstrating attention to client and customer needs that we believe is the hallmark of the service which CMS itself offers in the European legal services sector. The CMS Business of the Year Award The CMS Business of the Year Award reflects all the qualities which constitute good business in Europe today. Marketing slogans employing the word ‘customer’ are all too familiar. And while customer relationship management moved from a buzzword to a business strategy many years ago, this cate- gory sets out to discover which enterprises really do put the customer first. With a tough panel of judges, organisa- tions here face a gruelling application procedure to prove they are indeed focusing their business around their public. However the judging panel also wanted to see evi- dence of how these strategies and practices have lead to healthy balance sheets. There needs to be a clearly expressed and widely communicated strategy; mainly focus- ing on risk prevention methods from a commercial, environmental, governance and social development perspective above and beyond legislative requirements. Certainly, corporate sustainability is of increasing importance, as companies not only develop heightened ethics and a desire to help the environment, the communities in which they operate and society at large, but also because stakeholders and the public have come to expect enterprise to act in a more socially responsible way. Of course, cynics might suggest a commit- ment to CSR does wonders for public relations; and while that’s partly true, the European Business Awards application proce- dure weeds out the companies that are not truly committed to sustainable practices at the first hurdle. You would expect big corporate hitters to be keen to make a play for this award; and indeed, they are here, as you can see from the list below. What’s great, as with many other categories, is that smaller players are also in the running. It is encouraging to see SMEs and even start-ups are beginning or running their businesses with good corporate sustain- ability entrenched in the ethics from day one. The judges will be looking for responsible business practices, which have positive impacts in the workplace, the market, the environment and the community. What is clear is that the Ruban d’Honneur recipients in this category are not businesses where CSR is considered a matter of ticking boxes - these companies have sustainability and corporate governance as part of the DNA of their business.
